Overall objectives: Integrate and further process the knowledge arising from the other WPs, taking into account also experiences and know-how already in place in Southern Countries, Enhance the co-operation between relevant existing actors, such as scientific networks, on farm breeding networks, and any other local organizations for breeding and maintenance of conservation varieties, Provide the society at large with adequate information about scientific results and on-going research. Besides, WP4 will contribute to enlarge the scientific basis of organic breeding. It will also point out the role of the on farm conservation and breeding.
Results 2007 and 2008 harvests Results of field visits and interviews wheat, maize, beans, and spinach
Context: It is not established to what extend farmers seeds management in Europe constitute a complementary strategy for:preserving part of agro-biodiversity and for contributing to novel phenotypes Identify key points in maintenance, breeding in the existing European initiatives on seeds of landraces, conservation varieties and special 'amateur' varieties likely to improve the breeding of these seeds Develop methodologies for conservation and breeding in an approach of participatory innovation development, involving all relevant actors and adapted to the diversity of local seeds.
Work Overall objective: Under the expectations lie different definitions or interpretations of the concept of land races, conservation varieties and amateur varieties among different stakeholders in different countries and/or regions. Therefore it is important to map and clarify those differences and to identify conflicting areas between current practices and current (draft) regulations.
Brazilian agriculture: sharp duality of agricultural models local/traditional/family/small-scale farming (large diversity): main producer of food for the national market: 70% beans; 46% corn, 87% cassava, 58% milk - 75% of rural labor. Small farms represent 85%, but occupy only 25% of the cultivated area. Agrobusiness/industrial farming: “commodities”/commercial crops for exportation. Main product: soybean (45% of the cultivated area);1/3 of the Gross National Product (PIB) Two ministeries: MAPA and MDA

Pourpose: to share experiences and strategies between scientists and farmers from the North and the South, to promote mechanisms for an effective preservation, sustainable use and benefits sharing at global scale. And then, to be able to enlarge the scenario propositions at the international level. So we need: to share experiences and strategies between scientists and farmers from the North and the South, to promote mechanisms for an effective preservation, sustainable use and benefits sharing at global scale. And then, to be able to enlarge the scenario propositions at the international level.

State of art: notion of adaptation and evolution One important aim of FSO is to describe the varieties bred on-farm and to analyse the mechanisms (farmers practices, natural selection) that drive the evolution and adaptation of these varieties.
