20th of July region La Vera Province of Cáceres,Extremadura,Spain.
The Technical workshop is organised by the Center for Research and Development on Organic Agriculture formed by (INIA,Ministry of Science and Innovation and the regional goverment of Extremadura-Junta de Extremadrura) in project collaboration with the Ministry of Environment,Rural and Marine Environment.
The Project “On-Farm horticultural crop varieties evaluation under organic cultivation management”, starts by the initiative of the Ministry of Environment, Rural and Marine Environment, as part of the actions framed in The Implementation Plan for the Promotion and Development of Organic Agriculture, to respond to the actual demand of supply of better adapted organic seeds in the markets. It began with the aim to evaluate and characterize the “On-Farm” development of a diverse range of traditional and commercial horticultural crop varieties in collaboration with farmers in order to identify those varieties that better meet the socio-economical and agro-environmental needs of this production system, that it´s based in ecological processes, biodiversity and cycles adapted to the local conditions. The research project evidences those possible actions which could be developed to select crop varieties which characters are more interesting for farmers and consumers due to the appropriate management of the crop varieties on-farm, resistance to pests and diseases, adaptability to cultivation techniques and agro-climatic conditions, nutritional qualities and the adaptation to the organic food supply and distribution system adopted by producers, being this the local ,national or international market.
